Native American History
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will research and discover the rich Native American history, spanning from pre-columbian times to the modern day.
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
- 1. Cultural and Historical Perspectives: Students will analyze the diverse cultures, traditions, and societal structures of Native American tribes prior to European contact, highlighting their contributions to American history and culture. Example: Ft. Laramie Treaty of 1851 with the Plains Indians and the subsequent treaties and the influence of Sand Creek Massacre on future treaties.
- 2. Impact of Colonization: Students will evaluate the effects of European colonization, including land displacement, treaties, and government policies, on Native American communities from the 15th century to the present.
- 3. Contemporary Issues: Students will examine the ongoing challenges faced by Native American communities, such as sovereignty, cultural preservation, and representation, and explore efforts for advocacy and self-determination.
